The Learning Styles Unit

First we will look at characteristics that are associated with the left and right hemispheres (sides) of the brain. You can take an online survey at http://frank.mtsu.edu/~studskl/hd/learn.html. Click on the Hemispheric Dominance Test on the right side of the page. When you are done Click on the Left vs. Right section and read what applies to your style. Keep this data to help you in your final presentation.
Or you may try this one

Secondly we will look at learning modes, ways we prefer to learn. This may be visual, auditory, kinesthetic/tactile, or read/write. Some surveys do not include read/write, but can still give you helpful suggestions for your learning modality preferences. Print off information from these sites that will help you learn using your learning modes. This first survey requires that you use a paper and pencil to record your answers.
http://www.wright.edu/~carole.endres/learnstyles.htm The second one is an online survey: http://www.vark-learn.com/english/page.asp?p=questionnaire. At this link select Questionnaire from the left margin. When you determine your modalities, go to the help sheets (also listed in the left margin) to get helpful suggestions and ideas for your modality. Write out or print out helpful suggestions and information. If you still aren’t sure of your results, you might try http://www.berghuis.co.nz/abiator/lsi/lsiframe.html . There are two surveys, Test 1 and 2, listed on the left margin. This link also has excellent strategies to help you.

Next we will look at some other interesting aspects of the way you learn at
http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html This survey blends your learning styles and overlaps these characteristics you’ve identified. This survey compares active and reflective learners, sensing and intuitive learners, visual and verbal learners and sequential vs. global learners. The best part about this site is the helpful suggestions that accompany your results. Print out your data sheet with the results of your survey, and then go to the Learning Style Descriptions link at the bottom of the survey page. Read the sections that apply to your style and take notes on this section. Ms. Nye also made some copies for those of you who would like to read this offline.

Finally we will look at multiple intelligences. This survey points you toward the special areas of talent that you possess.
http://literacyworks.org/mi/home.html When you have determined your talents according to this survey, go to the Practice link to get suggestions that help you make your projects and assignments easier using these intelligences. Print out only relevant materials that will help you with your final project.

Your summative presentation should be done in ‘your style’. If you are visual, it would be a very visually pleasing presentation. A kinesthetic person would ‘do’ something. An auditory person would probably talk a lot. The following is your criteria:

Five characteristics that are challenges and what I’ve learned can help:
I need to have directions explained really clearly before I begin a project.
I can read over the assignment and criteria sheets thoroughly again when I’m alone and quiet. I can also call a friend who has a different learning style that can explain it again for me. I can call another friend that has a similar learning style to mine that can explain what he/she believes the assignment to be. I can take notes in class when the teacher is explaining the assignment and be sure to file them where I can find them again.
